RSS – Why Let Your RSS Feed Be a Virus?
Temptation
Go on; admit it, how many of you want to just use your RSS feeds, grab some articles, republish somebody else’s work and get massive amounts of visitors with little effort on your side? Especially these days when everyone is throwing their content onto the internet for the taking through RSS Feeds (Real Simple Syndication) and social media outlets, such as My Space, Facebook, Twitter and so on.
Who’s right?
There has been a huge debate about this for a number of years and as more and more blogs come online every second, more people are becoming very protective about what they have written, and of course rightly so. Many authors truncate their articles and that does help, this also opens another question as to whether a full or cropped article will generate more traffic to your site. I’m not debating that in this piece but by the end you may see the benefit of a full article and why Going For It Online uses them. I do believe though that a lot of bloggers and webmasters are really missing the point as to what the real power of RSS is and the benefits of syndicating have on your blogging and website’s promotional activities.
Compounding, The Real Power
RSS delivers your content directly to your subscriber’s RSS reader which is your main priority but more importantly you want your subscribers to syndicate your feed too, yes you do, why? To give the article that all important mass viral spread. I know a lot of you know what I mean, but many hear the words and phrases but don’t really stop to think more deeply about the true implications of it! If you’re familiar with the concept of MLM (Multi Level Marketing) you’ll know that the entire model is based on compounding their efforts by simply getting people to talk e.g. talking to 1 person who talks to 9 people, who in turn will talk to 9 who again talks to 9 and so on. The numbers are mind-blowing, so with this example let’s suppose this process was repeated just 6 times, you’d be looking at a mind numbing, eye popping 531,441 people! Now tell me who wouldn’t want that kind of exposure for your blog, website or business? It’s similar to the concept of word of mouth, it is one of the most powerful ways to get your message out there and that is exactly what RSS is able to do, virally spread the word (or in our case article) to as many people as possible.
Too Protective
Ok, so if it’s this good why are a lot of marketers kicking against it? Truthfully it puzzles me, I fully understand bloggers and online content authors are very protective of their work and I understand that, however, personally I’m writing to be heard, seen and generate interest in my site and in what I’m doing. If the goal is to make money from what I write, then I’ll publish a book, it’s as simple as that! What I write on the internet is for exposure and PR and hopefully people will like what they read and visit my site.
Unscrupulous Marketers
What really upsets bloggers and webmasters is that many unscrupulous marketers are using scraping software blatantly and illegally to copy their content in full and re-publish it on a splog, along with a gazillion other articles in a vain attempt to look interesting. Now I’m not sure how many people realise this, but for those who don’t, this is all duplicate content and is as next to useless for them in the eyes of any search engine ranking algorithm. The main search engines are looking to combat this problem for example with bounce rates, the time a visitor is on your site. If you went to a site that was just ads and junk would you stay and read it? Probably not, I wouldn’t unless it was my article (LOL). In reality neither will the search engines, leaving no real value to the splogger in the long run for SEO or page ranking benefits. Unfortunately many scrapers will remove your URL’S and attributes to who the author was. I know it hurts like hell but the truth is not many people are reading splogs anyway, put it down to the cost of doing business.
Choice
I choose with my RSS feeds,(and never say never as it always bites you in the behind) to let people know that they can use my written content for their site, especially high ranking sites, publish it, share it with friends and make money indirectly with it, with a couple of simple yet fair conditions. They keep all my URL’s and text intact with zero alterations and don’t use the article within a book without the express permission (and a little haggling) of Going For It Online. That I’m sure is fair, don’t you agree?
Use It Or loose It
I realise a lot of you won’t be comfortable with it, but RSS Feeds are able to share content on a mass scale, why fight it? Far too much effort is wasted in doing that, instead use RSS as a viral marketing tool to your advantage, and focus on good content for your unelected partners to distribute. It will reach more people with your calling card and who knows you may generate even more traffic and make some extra cash on the way!
